Active Bystanders: The Four Ds

Looking for ways to safely intervene when you witness harassment? Try one of the Four Ds:

DIRECT INTERVENTION: If it is safe to do so, confront the harasser and let them know that what they are doing is wrong.

DISTRACT: Go up to the person being targeted and ask for the time or for directions, pretending you’re lost. Create a distraction that will help de-escalate the situation

DELEGATE: Ask for a 3rd party to help, it can be another person, a transit employee, a teacher, a manager, etc.

DELAY: After it happens, asking the victim if they are okay is powerful and makes people feel less alone. In this climate, this is needed more than ever.
