Holla on the Go: Gauntlet of Men

My roommate and I walked up to the liquor store to get beers. While getting beers out of the cooler a man repeatedly asked us where the party was and what street we lived on. We ignored him. At the register half a dozen young men were hanging out/checking out and one of them started making comments about my roommates body, speaking positively about the grey in my hair, asking where we lived, etc. We ignored and tried not to engage and they wouldn’t stop. We had to push past them to get out and I was worried they were going to follow us home and all kinds of questions of how to handle our safety ran through my head. Thankfully they didn’t follow us. But the whole walk home we discussed how powerless we felt, because you never know what kind of response could elicit violence.
